Dr. Mark Basik is born in Montreal and studied medicine at McGill University. He then completed a general surgical residency at the Université de Montréal, followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. After working as a surgical oncologist at the Hotel-Dieu hospital in Montreal, he returned to the USA as a visiting investigator at the National Human Genome Research Institute in Maryland.
He began working as a surgical oncologist at the Jewish General Hospital in 2003 and is presently the medical director of the inter-disciplinary breast cancer team at the Segal Cancer Center. Besides practicing breast cancer surgery, Dr. Basik also leads a research laboratory studying the molecular biology of breast cancer. His research interests include DNA alterations in breast cancer and the discovery of novel diagnostic biomarkers for breast cancer. He is also studying the mechanism of resistance to treatments used in breast cancer.
Finally, Dr. Basik¹s team is searching for novel biomarkers in the blood of breast cancer patients. He is the recipient of the Guerrera Family Cancer Scientist Award.
